Sprint Showdown And All-Star Race Lineup

Carl Edwards won the pole for Saturday night's All-Star race at Charlotte after knocking Kurt Busch from the spot.

“This is so unbelievable, because we tried so hard,” Edwards said after qualifying. “This is such an exciting qualifying format. There’s so much pressure, and to get the pole -- it’s spectacular. Our car was fast. Our pit crew was fast. It was awesome."

Instead of his own name above the driver side window, Edwards replaced it with the late Dick Trickle's.  Trickle died Thursday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Boger City, N.C.  “We felt like we needed to do something to honor him,” Edwards said. “I don’t know that I deserved to have his name above my window.”

In a conventional two-lap qualifying session that preceded the Sprint All-Star Race time trials, Martin Truex Jr. won the pole for Saturday’s Sprint Showdown at 193.424 mph (27.918 seconds), edging Jamie McMurray (192.699 mph) for the top starting spot.

The top two finishers in the Showdown, which features a field of 23 cars this year, will transfer into the main event. Winless since 2007, Truex is a veteran of the Showdown, and he confessed to being envious of those who were exempt into the All-Star Race.

“I’m definitely jealous that I’m not out there tonight,” Truex said after winning the pole. “For an event like this, it’s neat to see them mix it up and do something different because it’s an All-Star race. There’s not points here. You don’t have to go by the book.  “This is the weekend where you want to throw out the rules and make new stuff up, which generally they like to do.”

The Sprint Showdown will start at 7:30 p.m. ET, followed by the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race at 9 p.m. ET, both televised on SPEED.

Michael Waltrip To Race In Daytona 500

Thursday it was announced by Swan Racing that Michael Waltrip will drive the No. 30 Toyota in 2013's opening race at Daytona.

"This race is what defines NASCAR," said Waltrip, who started 25 consecutive Daytona 500s from 1987-2011.  "Even if someone isn't a NASCAR fan, they understand what the Daytona 500 is.  I like getting up for the big games, and this is a big one.  I'm honored I'll always be introduced as a Daytona 500 champion.  I come here with a lot of respect for those before me who made the event what it is"

Waltrip will replace David Stremme, who is scheduled to drive the Swan Racing entry for the rest of the season. Stremme gave the move his blessing because he could see the rapport of Waltrip, Eury and Swan competition director Steve Hmiel.  Waltrip is teaming up again with crew chief Tony Eury Jr., who was atop the pit box for him during the 2005 season at Dale Earnhardt Inc.

"Michael is a familiar face for a lot of us here at Swan Racing," Eury said. "We know each other's habits, wants and needs on the track. We're going to Daytona to compete and hopefully we'll make a mark for Swan Racing."

Waltrip has won two Daytona 500s (2001, 2003).  His four victories in the Sprint Cup Series all came at restrictor-plate tracks, three at Daytona International Speedway and one at Talladega Superspeedway.

The Great American Race will be ran February 14.

Gale Wins Homestead, Buescher Takes Championship

Friday under the lights was a battle all the way to the end between Cale Gale and Kyle Busch.  Gale beat Busch to the finish line and picked up his first Camping World Truch Series win at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

On the last restart of the season finale, Busch lead the field to the green but Gale had a slightly better run coming off of turn four.  He took the inside as the two rubbed and collided.  "I can tell you right now, coming off of [turn] four, that's not my driving style...I had to take it while I could", Gale said of the rough racing.  "Kyle's a racer. He's been in the same position I've been in. We've all seen hungry racers get an opportunity and take it. That's what you have to do in this sport."

James Buescher started the race in the 17th spot but quickly moved his way up to secure his first Championship title after Dillon's hopes were shattered..  "Everybody on this team has done a fantastic job," said Buescher, who won four races this season. "We had a shot at it last year, but we came into this year swinging and did a lot of work over the offseason.  It definitely paid off.  This is definitely the coolest thing I've ever done in racing."

NSCS: Joey Logano Claims Homestead Pole

Joey Logano, driver of the No. 20 Home Depot Toyota, turned a lap of 176.056 mph (30.672 seconds) during Friday's qualifications to win the pole for the season finale race at Homestead.  He edged Chase contender and points leader, Brad Keselowski, from the top spot.

Sunday will be Logano's last race with Joe Gibbs Racing since he will make the transition to Penske Racing.

"To go out there in our final race with JGR, to go out there and get a pole for those guys -- they deserve it, all the guys back at the shop," Logano said. "I've been working with 'em since I was 15 years old. ... They gave me the car I needed to do what I had to do, and I did what I had to do, and we got the pole."

Starting Lineup: Cup Series AdvoCare 500 At Phoenix

Kyle Busch, driver of the No. 18 Toyota, turned a lap at Phoenix International in 25.943 seconds (138.766 mph) to claim his second pole of the season.  Busch was the last driver to make a qualifying run Friday afternoon on scuffed tires.

"For us, the race track wasn't that bad," Busch said. "Yeah, it was really slick to start with when we first went out for practice earlier, but we were fast right off from our first mock run. We just had to make slight changes."

Jimmie Johnson, who is currently leading in standings, will start 24th after posting his worse start of the 2012 Chase.

Race coverage begins Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Sprint Cup Series: AAA Texas 500 Lineup

During Friday's qualifying session Jimmie Johnson, who is currently the Chase leader, turned a lap of 191.076 mph (28.261 seconds) to win his first pole at Texas Motor Speedway.  He edged Greg Biffle by .103 seconds to capture his fourth pole of the season and 29th of his career.

''It was a white-knuckle lap.  I can say I didn't leave anything on the table with that one,'' Johnson said of his qualifying run.

"A couple of opportunities to kind of lose control there, but staying on the throttle definitely kept the car pointed in the right direction and blasted off a great lap."

Kyle Busch will start third and Brad Keselowski, who is second in the Chase, managed a top-ten starting position after completing rather inferior qualifying runs during the past four races.

"It feels like a pole," said Keselowski. "It may not be a pole, but it feels like a pole to us. Our car has had a ton of speed since we've been here, in race trim, but qualifying trim has been our weakness all year...So I think that bodes very well for us come Sunday."

Race coverage begins Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET and the green flag will fly at 3:19 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Johnson Wins At Martinsville And Takes Over Chase

Jimmie Johnson won Sunday's Cup race at Martinsville and proved he is definitely a contender for the Championship.  He started from the pole to pick up his fourth victory of the season and seventh career win at the notorious .526-mile short track.

Johnson now leads Brad Keselowski in standings by two points.  "I'm ecstatic about the win today. I'm ecstatic about the points lead," he said.  Johnson overtook Keselowski with 14 laps to go, then held off Kyle Busch on a final restart.

Keselowski who began the race way back in 32nd, managed a sixth place finish.  "You can't count this team out," said Keselowski afterwards. "This team has a tremendous amount of heart. Just proud of 'em. I know this championship is going to come down to Homestead. You've just got to be in a position to where you've got a shot at it...We'll keep fighting the good fight."

Sprint Cup Series Lineup: Martinsville Speedway

Jimmie Johnson captured his third pole of the season and 28th of his Cup career during Friday's qualifications at Martinsville Speedway.  He had a top speed of 97.598 mph (19.402 seconds) at the .526-mile track.

"After qualifying as poorly as I did in the spring (22nd), I focused on these two laps pretty heavily and wanted to make sure I did my job," Johnson said. "We just hit it [Friday], from the car standpoint, from my standpoint of driving the race track. We got it right."

Brian Vickers will start second after a lap of 97.533 mph (19.415 seconds).  He had the fastest car during the first practice that took place Saturday.

Current points leader, Brad Keselowski wasn't so lucky during the qualifying session.  He will start 32nd.

"I can tell you, I don't enjoy qualifying like crap," Keselowski said. "That's not what I come to the race track to do. But it's been the course, as of late, and you take solace in the fact that, in the part that matters, the actual racing, my team has done a great job preparing excellent cars and executing on all levels.

"You try to focus on what you have that's going right, and that's what we have that's going right."

Race coverage begins Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.
